Frank Joseph ISON was born in Quy in 1893 (Chesterton Q2-1893 3B:474), son of Elijah and Clara ISON (née MUGGLETON).
1901 census...Aged 7, he was at Stow End, Quy with his father Elijah ISON [42] stock man on farm, born Quy; his mother Clara [35] born Quy; brother Charles F [12] domestic groom born Fen Ditton; sisters Alice A [10] born Quy and Lily M [4] born Teversham. 1911 census...Aged 17 a farm labourer, he was at Orchard Street, Quy with his parents; brother Charles (horsekeeper for timber merchant) and sister Lily. 15th October 1919 his father completed the Living Relatives Army form and gave father and mother at Orchard Street, Quy; brother Charles [31] sisters Alice [28] and Lily [27] His cousin Harold ISON was killed in Belgium in 1917 serving in the Cambridgeshire Regiment.... click here ...and cousin Roger ISON died of wounds in Belgium in 1918, serving in The Queens....click here |

He attested in Cambridge on 10th December 1915. . He gave his age as 22 years 7 months, resident at Oxford Street, Quy, a horsekeeper, next of kin, his father Elijah. He was 5 feet 4 inches (162.6 cm) tall, chest 35" to 37" (88.9 to 94 cm),weighing 133 lbs (60.3 kg), Church of England, and was placed in the Reserves. Mobilised as Driver in No.1 Reserve Horse Transport Depot at Park Royal on 2nd August 1916 and transferred on 29th August 1916 to 241 Company Army Service Corps. 23rd January 1917 he embarked at Southampton and via Le Havre, and Marseilles, he arrived on the HT "Transylvania" in Salonika on 2nd February, where he proceeded to No. 3 R.H.T.D and on 8th February moved on to 8th Mounted Brigade Pack Echelon, Salonika and then to 860 Company, 8th Mounted Brigade A.S.C. Then some more moves that are too faint to read, before transferring to the 1st Battalion, Welsh Regiment on 1st March 1918. Reported missing (date illegible) and death accepted as being on 8th April 1918. Sadly the remains of his Army service record in the "burnt documents" are very badly damaged and his record is not found in the International Red Cross Prisoner of War records.His "Soldier's Personal Effects" entry says he died a Prisoner of War.
